snuff, the theory of relativity doesn't prohibit travel faster than the SOL. The problem at lower speeds is attaining the SOL for the reasons that Lighthouse outlines.
Tachyons are theoretical particles that cannot travel slower than the SOL. Also, if chronons do exist (and I think they must) then, if sufficient energy was imparted during a chronon, one could exceed the SOL without actually travelling at that speed.
I think chronons must exist because: consider a body at rest. If time is continuous, then the moment the body starts moving, it undergoes infinite acceleration - not moving, then suddenly moving. But if it undergoes infinite acceleration, it will attain infinite speed immediately too. ergo, time must be in discrete quantities.
