This is a complicated question. The only targeted effect of Nadilol is in healing the surface of the passageways in the lung and reducing the production of mucus, whatever the condition targeted. In the case of Asthma, this response, if proven, will ameliorate the condition but not "cure" it. The hypersensitive condition will remain. The problem with the current trial in asthma is that it is in mild asthma and Nadilol is really targeted at more severs asthma. This is how we must deal with the FDA of the USA. Firstly we must prove safety is mild condition before trialling in more severe conditions. We are unlikely to get results other than safety in the asthma trial. This will allow us to move on to trials in more severe asthma which should prove efficacy, as we will have excess mucus production to have an effect on. The beauty of the smoking trial is that we have very sick patients and we can show significant improvement. If successful, this trial will show efficacy and proof of concept. This opens up the field to trials in the whole range of pulmonary conditions. To be marketable in many conditions, we need inhaled delivery and that appears to be nearly ready. We have also proved safety in mild asthma. So a successful trial in smoking cessation opens the door to an exciting future. I hope that helps.
