The restructure also allows MIG to look at US toll roads that cash-strapped state governments are opting to sell. MIG and Spanish partner Cintra were earlier this month given approval to buy the Indiana toll road for $US3.85 billion. MIG also has investments in the Dulles Greenway in Virginia and the Chicago Skyway.

"We see much more potential in the US than the Australian market," Mr Allen said.

"The US has about 300 million people and there are only four major private toll roads."
