Yes agree an new system would be the go but that is unlikely to happen any time soon.
Well past time we cut ties with England, if not for Howard rigging the referendum we would be a republic now.
I was quite clear at the time that there was support for becoming a republic if the president was directly elected, hence why Howard a full on monarchist didn't give us that option. The referendum didn't reject becoming a republic, it rejected the proposed model.
The monarchy serves no real purpose in Australia now and has not for many years, the Queen basicly rubber stamps the appointment of the GG chosen by parliament.
The Queen has already indicated she is more than happy for Australia to become a republic, it's embarrassing than we still hang on to the apron strings
