'A tragedy': Greens MP sets Queensland river on fire in CSG protest

A Queensland river has erupted in flames as Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham ignited gas bubbling through in an anti-CSG protest.
The outspoken MP let out expletives and almost fell out of his boat as the gas exploded on the Condamine River near Chinchilla.
"Unbelievable, a river on fire," Mr Buckingham said in footage posted online.

"The river is alight. The most incredible thing I've seen, a tragedy in the Murray Darling Basin."
Mr Buckingham performed the stunt in protest of coal seam gas in the region.
The footage shows him briefly attempting to extinguish the flames, which he said burned for more than an hour.
Origin Energy told The Australian the nearest gas wells were several kilometres away,
The company has started seeing "more bubbles than there used to be" and stunts to ignite the well-known seeping gas was neither safe nor responsible, a spokesman told the newspaper.
"The seeps pose no risk to the environment or public safety, providing people show common sense and act responsibly around them.
"Research to date has identified several scenarios that could be contributing to the seeps, including the underlying geology, natural events such as drought and flood cycles, and human activity which includes water bores and CSG operations."
Mr Buckingham claims the gas was first discovered in the river shortly after CSG operations started nearby in 2012.
"I was shocked by the force of the explosion," Mr Buckingham said.
"Gas first started bubbling though the river shortly after the coal seam gas industry took off in the Chinchilla area. Since then the volume of gas bubbling through the river has massively increased and has spread along the river."
