I believe paypal is reasonably safe....
you DO NOT give the buyer the details of your account,,,only paypal has access to those details
however, tell the buyer YOU DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS...UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
AND THEY ARRANGE THEIR OWN FREIGHT CHARGES

I had some very expensive stuff for sale through Gum Tree
I set up the paypal account
    only overseas people seemed interested
when I did some research, I found they pay by credit card, then they complain the goods were not as described etc
then they get their money back...most credit cards will refund the money if there is a complaint

so this scammer was determined to get me...
he said he had paid the money into my account....together with the estimated $600 freight...his payment was not by credit card

however the scam was, I had to then take the $600 cash, pay it into a western express or some familiar, world wide cash providor,,,most PO are agents, to the freight company

    so far so good
I said why should I have to do that, he could pay the freight and organise it all himself
I was about to go out and get the money...to pay the freighter through federal express or whoever....
but figured I should check my Paypal account to check the money was there...of course it was not...I called Paypal...they said no money had been paid.

see the scam here was to get $600 off me....easy money he thought
I had a go at him via emal...he screamed and raged and made out he had paid me, plus the extra $600, and he wanted his money back, or at least the $600, so he could organise the freight himself.....
I let it go for a day, and still no money there from paypal

so do you see the scam, they either pay by a credit card, then get a refund....so you lose
or they get you to pay the freight....you lose

I am afraid I will not attempt to sell that way again...I will advertise, maybe, but they have to turn up with cash in hand...no way will I send my goods anywhere, unless I have cash in the bank first
I believe they have many scams to get you...even if its only $30 bucks, multiply that by a few hundred scams and you can see how it would add up
