I think there are a number of factors here. And most of them don’t have a very rosy outlook. 1) China has made no bones about taking Taiwan back in house. This is not good for our region and will drag Us into another conflict. 2) The US needs to justify its $750bn budget in ‘defence’ by using up some ordnance. They have also been a firm backer of Taiwan as an independent nation. 3) China now has defence expenditure of its own at circa $250bn and they aren’t making it for defence. 4) Proximity and strategy dictates that China will reach a tipping point of no return within 3 years and the ‘face’ of XiJingpin is at risk. 5) China are running regular battle drills across Taiwan now and their multiple incursions into Japanese waters and playing on Indian borders is giving them a strategic ‘look’ at things. 6) Biggest risk for Australia is the US coming to the aid of Taiwan, we will be blackmailed into helping them as will Japan/India 7) By taking HK / Taiwan back in house this sets up the next step which will be lack of freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. Then they are much closer to a lot of countries and their resources. I know China haven’t invaded anyone but the expenditure going on defence currently belies a defensive posture. Also, who would invade 1.4Bn people? It would be tantamount to suicide for even the largest pact of countries. As I said last week, this is a piece about Taiwan. If the West bottles it they will set the agenda for China to adopt a much more aggressive posture in the region. If we aggressively react, we can shut it down early. Game on.

Yes we've witnessed the decline of the USA/Western civilisations for years and the rise of China. Can't say we didn't see it coming. Taiwan, Philippines most in danger. Not sure about Japan but Australia is about to get a huge dose of reality as China slowly attacks our economy at all levels... tourism, education, importation and so on. They'll control PNG in all likelihood and will have a naval base on the nearest Island to Australian shores.
