Short selling was reinstated as a trading strategy after the GFC settled down, however naked short selling was banned. IMO it still occurs and is rife among the small end of the ASX.
There are many individuals and companies using these high frequency trading techniques to damage long term holding strategies. They love liquidity events and need these to function properly so that is why they await the announcements and irrespective of how positive the announcement may be, they will sell down the fact
I have learnt to watch the crossings (xt, cxxt) throughout the day as this is the time they will commence their trading and almost always trading opportunities arise.
I despise them but have come to live with them.
