Georgia is a country that was promised NATO membership in 2008, and Putin mentioned Georgia in his radical demands made to the West in December last year. IMO, it's been prudent of WP to wait and make sure that the conflict doesn't spread further down the Black Sea, especially (god forbid) if things turn around for Russia in Ukraine. Threats from Russia to Georgia have persisted and need to be taken seriously.
