As the announcement said,"SmartTrans has been granted the right to bill its China Mobile customers directly through their phone bills – this will enable immediate and easy transactions". I don't imagine CM provided this access to 500m customers through altruism. They did it because it is beneficial to them as well. They will therefore be looking to maximise their revenue potential from the deal - including through marketing and advertising.

At average $5/month gross revenue from the subscription service, SMA only need to capture 1% (5m) of those customers to make an absolute fortune ($300m gross a year). Even one-tenth of 1% will be enough to generate a viable business.

And that does not include the 'lucrative' percentage of each purchase of V1 lottery tickets.
