Currently there is only one CBD pharmaceutical approved by the FDA (Epidiolex), and it is intended for human use. This means that they have undergone years of research and testing to determine that it is safe, efficacious and has clinically proven benefits to health. They have overcome the final hurdle: FDA approval.
For animals, the number of FDA-approved CBD pharmaceuticals is zero. The FDA has recently cracked down on products claiming to contain CBD and be efficacious, but when tested, many failed to have any or an adequate concentration of CBD, failed to have a bioactive solution/formulation that allows the body to absorb the compound, had higher/lower concentrations than what was stated (increases risk of overdosing), and fundamentally - no research that their formulation is safe or has any benefit.
CP1 is nearing completion of phase 2 trials, and is on the front foot in becoming the first company to develop a CBD-containing formulation that is approved by the FDA for animals. The recent ann to commercialise their microencapsulation technology is a huge protection, as they own the IP to create products that can effectively pass CBD products from the mouth into the digestive tract for absorption.
When it comes to medicating animals, veterinarians must in the first instance look to pharmaceuticals that are approved for animal use (tested to be safe and efficacious). If one is not available, they must look to pharmaceuticals approved for humans and extrapolate based on research done. If/when CP1 becomes approved by the FDA, it will become the first product to be approved and regulated to be safe for animals. It will be a win for animals, win for owners, win for veterinarians, and win for shareholders.
