Facebook is investing billions of USD in the technology of Virtual and Augmented Reality for a few years now.
The vision is a future entertainment and society world like in the book "Ready, Player, One".
I have red that book. It is pure awesome. Recommend it to everybody. I think too that this will be the near future.
Book was filmed. I think by Steven Spielberg. Not sure about that.

Anyway, this will be more than Games. The Technology is intended for almost everything e.g. military, medicine, entertainment, communication etc.
It is difficult to compare this Facebook Game with Animocas Sandbox Game because Facebooks development is not only a Game. And it is not a Smartphone/Desktop Game. You will use special Glasses for it and you are IN this world.
Sony had this second life thing about 10 years ago. I played it too. It was very interesting but technology was not enough developed for this idea.
Thats why it flopped i think.

In my personal opinion, i think that there is room for both competitiors.
Animocas Game and Facebooks technology will have their customers.
