    John Howard's mean-spirited refusal to say "Sorry!" to the stolen generations and self-serving, ill-conceived 'intervention' are stains on our history.

    Despite Tony Abbott's claims to insights, expertise and good intentions the scorecard is still out for him in this area. To release statements about cuts to legal aid affecting Aborigines this late in the election campaign look pretty creepy.

    Aborigines have made great strides in recent years; developments such as NITV have been huge and at the grassroots levels many Aborigines are rising to the forefront. Access to high quality education, cultural opportunities, health and support services has made a difference but needs to be built on.

    Let's hope that regardless of who is returned that a non-partisan approach to amending our archaic, constitutional era Constitution also progresses the disadvantage and discrimination against Aborigines.
