Abbott's comments on Japan re: WW2 were disgusting. The actions of that country were inexcusable. Praising anyone's bravery while engaged serving in the outwardly aggressive and barbaric campaign that Japan launched is unacceptable, in any context. It is like praising the bravery of a suicide bomber, literally.
If you need 'links' to figure out why this is morally disgusting to many, perhaps you need either a little help, or some lessons in history.
Furthermore, given the historical revisionism, and resurgent nationalism that is creeping into Japan's school system and politics, I would be somewhat hesitant to call them 'best friends'. I can think of a few countries who are much better and more trustworthy friends with us in the region. I wonder how they felt.
