How can they just state this as fact? - it's actually garbage. The Victorian government was never in a position to win from Aug 2012 according to the polls - they were never in front from then on. If you believe the polls the LNP actually closed the gap in the last months.

They only ever held a one seat majority and when a rogue member became an independent they suffered from a perception of being unable to govern properly. They only narrowly lost with a 3% swing. Abbott had bugger all to do with it.
