Well they have helped the consumer. The Button car plan instigated a slow withdrawal of tariff protections that have allowed Australians to much cheaper cars. The extended transition period was supposed to give manufacturers a chance to adapt to competition but globalisation put paid to that. Once Toyota goes the Government will be able to get rid of the last 5% import tariff.
