When did the age of enlightenment occur between a smack being socially acceptable and a smack not being socially acceptable.
Was it the late 1980s or the 1990s?
My parents had four boys who where into mischief, so a smack was an effective way of letting us know we had overstepped the line.
There is definitely a difference between a smack to swiftly signify that a line has been crossed, to hitting or beating.
While Abbott may have stumble with the words and could have said it better, I agree with Abbott about the symbolic gesture of a smack.
