TONY Abbott has done a full retreat from the opposition's call for a boost to Australia's equipment and troops in Afghanistan.
A spokeswoman said that while in Afghanistan, Mr Abbott was ''reassured that no extra resources or troops were needed'' by the commander, Major General John Cantwell.
Last month, defence spokesman David Johnston said requests had come ''from commanders in the field and the troops themselves'' for increases in troops and equipment. He proposed more troops, Tiger helicopters, Abrams tanks, mortars and artillery. The tanks proposal was widely ridiculed.
