"The Constitution lays down important rules for the position of judges. In particular:
? it makes it clear that, once appointed, judges are entitled to retain their position until they reach the retiring age of 70, or any earlier age validly set by parliament; ? it provides a procedure for the removal of judges in exceptional circumstances, by the Governor General in Council, on an address from both Houses of the Parliament, on the grounds of "proved misbehaviour or incapacity"; ? it prevents the reduction of judges' salaries during their period in office.
Each of these requirements is regarded as important for preserving the independence of the judiciary.
