One of my many failings is the manner in which I accept compliments; I'm dreadful at it, so the best I can do is to say "thanks for the feedback".

I grew up working with axe-wielding woodcutters and farmers who didn't have giant tractors. Even though we had two kids, I've never received handouts from our welfare system.

That up-bringing taught me about the crap-detector test and ensured my subsequent training always involved taking the blinkers off.

As a product of a much more austere era than this one I relate closely to Joe Hockey's remarks about ending the culture of entitlement that developed on John Howard's watch. I therefore squirm watching Hockey trying to stay true to Tony Abbott's great big welfare for the wealthy regime.
