That's just another of those delusional mantras coined by Abbott & Co to hide reality and confuse mainstream Australians.

The reality is that most people already work very hard; as demonstrated by how long we work compared to people in other countries.

The main ways in which people are able to get ahead is to either invest what capital they can muster and run the gauntlet of operating a small business or by upgrading their skills so they can access better remunerated employment.

If Australians are to become wealthier we need investment in productive enterprises of the future and in the constant re-skilling of our people.

Cutting costs by sacking workers or knee-capping their remuneration is a recipe for a poorer Australia and wealthier company executives.

It's pretty apparent that Tony Abbott is clueless on such matters and in full pursuit of his ideologically inspired drive to deliver welfare to the wealthy at the expense of Aussie toilers.
