Big Pharma AbbVie ($ABBV) announced a €40 million ($44.7 million) investment in Ireland, aimed at increasing the production of drug delivery devices, such as a pen injector that is used to administer medications for autoimmune disorders.
The expansion of its Ballytivnan, Ireland, facility is expected to create 50 jobs over the next four years. That's in addition to the 75 people who currently work at the site.
The investment was supported by the Industrial Development Authority of Ireland, and increases the company's total investment in Irish manufacturing to €134 million ($149.7 million) since its 2013 spinoff from Abbott Laboratories ($ABT) as a biopharmaceutical specialist.
"This investment reinforces our commitment to serving patients around the world, and it is a credit to the expertise of our team in Ireland," AbbVie Senior Vice President Azita Saleki-Gerhardt, said according to an Irish news outlet.
Ballytivnan is located along the country's northwest coast, near the border with Northern Ireland.
The moves comes on the heels of a planned €153 million ($171 million) medical device manufacturing expansion from Johnson & Johnson ($JNJ), which includes a €100 million ($112 million) expansion in Limerick, Ireland, and a new €53 million ($59 million) plant in Cork, Ireland.
