RacingVictoria Chief Executive Giles Thompson issued a statement on Fridaymorning saying racing needed a national approach to deal with retiredracehorses.

"It is clear that national compliance with the industry'ssystem of data collection relating to the retirement of horses is not workingas it should. We will also be working with Racing Australia, our owners andtrainers, and other state racing authorities to rectify this," Thompsonsaid.

"Equine welfare is a non-negotiable for the Australianracing industry and the goal of ensuring a home for every healthy thoroughbredas it exits the racing industry must remain a priority for all.

"Through our Off The Track program we are workingto create a demand for the thoroughbred and promoting a network of 50re-trainers to support the rehoming efforts of owners and trainers.

"While the racing industry is able to enforce strict rulesand demand the highest standards of treatment for horses during their racingcareer, once a horse is retired from racing it leaves our jurisdiction and thescope of the national rules of racing."

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) also issued a statementfollowing the program.

“I am appalled by the vision broadcast tonight,” said TomReilly, chief executive of TBA.

“All horses, whether thoroughbreds or not, deserve to be treatedhumanely and with dignity,” added Mr Reilly.

“The full force of the law should be brought down on anybody inthe footage shown mistreating those horses.

“The thoroughbred industry needs a full and frank discussionabout what happens to horses when they leave the industry. And while there isgood work being done to rehome horses, we have to look at how participants andregulators can and must do better.

“We also need to have confidence in the numbers the industrypublishes about what happens to animals when they leave racing.”

Meanwhile the Queensland abattoir highlighted in the programas responsible for the mass slaughter of racehorses will be investigated foralleged animal mistreatment, the Queensland Government has announced.
