Burried down the bottom of this glowing report of what's happening in the UK energy sector is the pearler....

The UK imported 4-6% of its power in the 1990s via this link. The share of imports in UK supplies halved during the 2000s before rising back to its current level of 6%.

The UK also has a 1GW link to the Netherlands and a 0.5GW cable to Ireland. A 1GW link to Belgium is to open early this year.A large number of new interconnectors are being developed and government projections suggest imported electricity could supply as much as a quarter of UK power by the mid-2020s.

Unfortunately, it seems we are all being duped by tremendous claims from governments who want to look to be doing the right thing for the climate. As you can see, it just means they are relying on importing their electricity needs via their network links to other EU nations, so net impact is extremely difficult to work out. And that seems to be the way of this current world - bamboozle people with facts that on the surface appear credible, but dig a bit deeper and you'll see it is no more than an optical illusion. The only problem for Australia is that we are an island nation with no-one nearby to connect up to for our shortfall in electricity.

I truly believe if we each feel so strongly about climate change and reducing carbon, then we personally need to put solar in, install batteries, remove ourselves from the grid, get rid of our cars (or buy an electric one), and only purchase consumables from entities who are genuinely doing something about their carbon footprint. The movement of the herd is what will shift the landscape, it's much more painful to shift the landscape in the hope that the herd will follow.
