Yorke Peninsula Council meeting fails to back Rex Minerals open-cut mine plan
29 MIN AGO
A special meeting of Yorke Peninsula Council has decided not to back a mining lease for the proposed Hillside copper and gold mine near Ardrossan.
Council CEO Andrew Cameron said it felt it did not have enough information to support granting a lease for Rex Minerals.
Some locals have expressed concern about the likely environmental impact on Saint Vincent Gulf and peninsula land from open-cut mining.
Mr Cameron said the council and community wanted more time to consider potential impacts and was requesting reports from agencies including the Environment Protection Authority.
"We consider them imperative in our decision-making and also that those reports be made available to the community for further consideration," he said.
"Council considered that the proposal lacked sufficient information to be able to make a considered and informed judgment on the application."
Rex Minerals has been promising strict environmental controls will apply for mining.
