Mine uncertainty hurting farming community

Meanwhile, Yorke Peninsula farmers say the State Government's decision to grant Rex Minerals another year to submit environmental protection program and social management plan, for the open-cut gold, copper and iron ore mine, has left them in limbo.
Brenton Davey, from a landowners' group, said the ongoing uncertainty over the Hillside mine near Ardrossan was taking its toll on businesses and the community's health.
"We're completely in limbo. I've got to try and run a business here and with this hanging over my head I can't do the long-term plans because I just don't know the information I need to run a business," he said.
"It affects my health, it affects the family and it affects the running of the family farm — the whole kit and caboodle."
Mr Davey feared there was no end in sight.
"Plenty of other people in the same situation and with a growing number of exploration licences here on the Yorke Peninsula it will be increasing."
Rex Minerals declined to comment until after a visit with farmers later this week.
