Depends on your interpretation of 'happiness'? It's about conditioning, about the environment you grow up in, about what you are taught, not indoctrinated into. People can still be happy without mod-cons.
Go back to basics of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I still haven't been able to master the use of a mobile phone, am I happy - YOU BET! I can do without the distraction of a seemingly useless device other than make a phone call.
