Engin sees momentum in Net phone calls

Telco Engin Ltd believes the internet phone calls market is experiencing a "groundswell of momentum" and competition from its bigger rivals will only speed up the process.

Engin managing director Ilkka Tales said Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology was moving fast.

"There's a groundswell of momentum happening, not just here in Australia, but globally," he said.

"The headlines are changing."

Engin, which specialises in offering VoIP to household consumers, was adding about 3,000 to 4,000 customers each month, Mr Tales said.
The company's subscribers grew 81 per cent to 19,000 in the December quarter, giving it an estimated 40 per cent share of the local market.

And competition from giants such as Telstra and Optus is only likely to accelerate growth in the segment.

"Certainly from our perspective it will mean that it'll help demystify the technology, it'll build momentum in this category," Mr Tales told ABC television.

"What's happened in North America and in Europe is that when the incumbents do enter the marketplace, the whole category rises and our focus is to ensure we're on top of the wave, not under the wave."

For now, Engin's focus is building awareness of its brand among consumers.

"We're still in phase one of a five-part strategy from a business perspective and the first part is obviously to build a brand presence for a completely unknown brand here in Australia and a completely new technology being VoIP," Mr Tales said.

"Our focus has been to drive volume in our business so our business model is based on our service fee and we make a slight margin on the call costs, but most of the savings we make on call costs we tend to pass through to the customer."
