Dicky, thanks for bringing the Piano up as I remember seeing the advertisment for it recently and you have made me get up this morning and iview the first 2 episodes. It's a little bit of a talent show dressed up in a feel good scenario. What is there not to like in here? Nothing as it's a fun show not taking itself too seriously. The half a dozen of so players each week are good, some obvioulsy highly skilled and some just good. better than i could do that's for sure. Unfortunately when i was in my early teens, my brother and i started piano playing and we got a teacher than did not give us creativity. She unfortunately suffered from narcolepsy as i found out later in life, but she used to sit between us both on a large stool and fall asleep. We found this all too funny and distracting and after a few weeks, we gave it all away. Shame. But to the tv show. episode one i came to the same conclusion as the judges, DJ the one handed player. There's always honoroble mentions but he was the man.
Now to what has piqued my interest through your note yesterday, episode 2. The best player was undoubtedly Jung, the 11 year old who lives not that far away ironically. I don't know him but his skill level and showmanship are on another level. Led me to think how much preparation do these folk have as he pulls out a gold jacket half way into the routine. food for thought. The show is slick and heavily edited but it's a different take on talent shows which i like. I don't see how Grace from geelong was demeaned for her well written piece. She can sing but she isn't a better player than 2 or so others. But that's not for you and me to judge. BUT, i did thing Jing should have won. As far as wokeness goes, nah. I think what they were dealing with was a search for something else besides hitting the black and white keys. Someone who has an extra story as it were because if this show was simply about talent, then it would be the same as all the others. You with me Dicky? Jing the incredible Chinese kid would probably win this whole competition and i havent seen anymore shows. I notice Preston market is up next. I go there every 2 to 3 weeks ironcally with my wife and/or daughter for our regular coffee and borek breakfast. The place is just a cultural ragoux of amazing proportions. It just makes you feel wonderful mixing with every culture you could possibly think of. Everyone is in a great mood, no shouting, people are courteous and i get my usual stuff from the usual people and a rapport grows. Just love the place however back to episode 2. Stories and backgrounds. jackiranda was wonderful and the makeup was good. i am a very big fan of ru pauls drag race. In fact many of my friends can't believe a dude like myself who loves a cold frothie and a funny meme likes watching dudes dressed up as women. But it is more than that and so it appears that the Piano is to. It's a show about everyday lives but it's not only about talent.
I don't get the politically correct aspect you referred to but it's only episode 2.
Can i just mention something. Last Friday the archibald painting prize winner was adjudicated. 903 entrants or so to start a while ago, 57 finalists which is a ridiculous number of finalists but maybe thats a marketing exercise there in itself. you can always put on your CV that you were a finalist. I know a chinese dude Hong Fu who was a finalist in 2009 with his portrait of Dame Elizabeh Murdoch, and it's a beauty. But recently i engaged with a paper journalist of note to inquire about the Archy and who i thought they'd pick as a winner. i spend a while narrowing my 57 down to 4. i can say that we both did not pick the winner. in fact, when i did this exercise last week, i went to the new south wales art gallery website and studied all 57 and made my choices. i scrubbed 25 in my first go through and the winner was in this lot. Go figure. Do i have artistic taste? Bloody oath. I've been taking photos for over 50 years with my trusted nikons and that makes me artistic. But is my taste the same as the archy judges? obviouslsy not, this time. were they wrong in their choice? No, just that i thought at least 8 were better. that's me. That's art. That's talent. No interference with a background story for me looking at the archy 57 but there sometimes is. I could type for ages about this, with your notion of wokeness leaking into episode 2. i don't think so.
But i am very keen to watch ep 3 which i will do as soon as i stop this. out of interest, ive met harry a few times over the last 2 years and now i know why he kept coming from sydney to melbourne. this TV show. he has a beautiful family , 3 girls and a wife. his is a great story and this piano is a good show. will it reach greatness towards its first series ending or will it just wane like so many of these types of talent shows. Good luck Dicky, nice topic mate.
