In a speech outliningthe watchdog’s priorities for the year, the ACCC questioned the high level ofmarket concentration within the economy.

 “What is at stake is the level ofconcentration, and so the health, of the Australian economy. There seems, ifanything, a current bias to excessiveconsolidation; to fewer firms in each sector. As a community we need toquestion whether this is the outcome we want,” ACCC chairman Rod Simssaid. “The ACCC’s policy advocacy and court arguments will thereforeincreasingly focus on protecting the competitive process, and educating thecommunity accordingly.”
