At present , it is estimated that every EVs benefit to society is about $10,000 per vehicle by avoiding those impacts.
So happy to have road tax adopted, if those other costs are charged to ICE drivers.
However, another issue is to have two seperate systems to tax for road use. An indirect federal tax on petrol for ICE cars and a state-based road usage tax only for EVs. This is never going to be satisfactory to either ICE or EV drivers.
Also, at present, not all states have such a tax so things get ridiculously messy when people travel interstate.
I am all for lifting the tax on petrol that is claimed to be for the funding of roads and then charge a road tax on all vehicles, ICE and EV alike.
The system now operating in Victoria is simply stupid, as it acts as a disincentive towards the adoption of EVs.
