Thanks to the research that has gone into electrolysers in the past decade or so , the cost of producing hydrogen has reduced dramatically and still has a ways to go.
While the process isn't very efficient per se, it still is a viable option compared to the alternatives. Especially when you consider that we likely have an excess of electricity at times in the future.
Who cares if someone makes some money along the way ?
