OK, so how does the temperature in the thermosphere affect the mesosphere, considering the discrete band at the interface between thermo and meso? If this band is freezing (and remains unchanged) how does the temp up there get through the band. And so on, down through the interfaces between meso and strat (0 deg C) and strat and trop (~ -45 deg C)?massively different...

The different layers of the atmosphere are not really "discrete". It's just a naming convention that's used to differentiate between different altitudes. It's not like you get to a certain altitude and the temperature gauge jumps a hundred degrees in a matter of metres.
