In Lara, Wollert and Maryvale, plans are progressing to build a trio of sky-high incinerators, which are capable of burning almost 1.5 million tonnes of our kerbside waste annually and harnessing the heat to create energy. Another two major facilities using a different technology are also set to open in Laverton North and Dandenong South. These five major waste-to-energy projects planned for Victoria have a combined capacity to swallow up a third of the roughly 5 million tonnes of waste sent to Victorian landfills each year – playing a role in the state's bid to divert 80 per cent of its waste away from landfill.
