    There is a simple reason why wind and solar will never provide 100% of demand for base load power. There is a point at which the cost of building the additional wind turbine or solar cell becomes not economically viable and the necessary finance to build such projects cannot be raised. This is because you have to build excess supply to offset the intermittent nature of renewables. But when the sun and wind are reliable, the marginal value of the excess to demand energy produced is minimal due to oversupply unless the excess is stored or transported elsewhere. At the moment, there is no practical and cheap storage technology available and power poles and wires are expensive. Unless the taxpayer subsidises this fantasy, the 100% renewable target is nothing more than just that. Ignoring subsides, I think we are nearing the point where new renewable projects cannot be financed, a point of inflexion you might say.
