They have a limited life because they are subjected to extreme loads throughout their life. Why do you think they shut down in extreme winds? There is another problem - they are at peak efficiency in the early years. From memory, after about 8 years they tend to start becoming less efficient (this is when they had a useful life of about 15 years so maybe now it may be 10-12 years before they start deteriorating in performance).
