So AEMO's Australian government mandated role includes (amongst many other responsibilities) allowing customers to purchse energy from a suppler of their choice and the coordination of the strategic development of the national electricity grid.

All states (and in addition, the Northern Territory and ACT) now have either aspirational or legislated zero-emissions targets, and some have strong renewable energy targets as well as green/renewable energy hydrogen strategies in place. Recent studies highlight the large employment benefits, economic recovery opportunities, through creation of new jobs while transitioning to renewable energy. So - irrespective of what the UN is doing - given that all states are moving towards zero emission/100% renewable energy, it seems that a national energy market operator ought to prepare for this...
Seems to not only make sense to me, but that is actually their job!
I thought I finish off by highlighting another misconception of yours.
To accuse a de facto market operation regulator/bureaucrat of not having "skin in the game" when that is exactly what you want - i.e. for them to be independent of any commercial interest, so they can make decisions that are best for the nation rather than their own pockets - shows just how little you have thought about what you have written above.
