"The battery can't compete ? Even though it isn't there specifically to compete against gas peakers ?"

You conveniently ignore the original motivation for creating the project at Hornsdale.

Was it "..to manage peaks, supply grid services.." or was it a politically inspired end-run around the S.A. and Fed Govt.'s by a certain Cannon-Brookes in response to the 2016 outage where the entire state was blacked out for how long?

Changing the facts after the event,.. tch tch.. no, no, say it isn't so! You say it wasn't there to compete with gas.. that's a made up story.

The sad reality is that this Hornsdale battery is only able to compete for any consecutive NEM blocks shorter than approximately 45 minutes (estimated, based on gas runup of ~25-30mins) and where it can meet the demand shortfall. This leaves it effectively competing with diesel.. (I.E. for the crumbs) The proof for this is found in the detailed AEMO statistics and is also alluded to in the most recent AEMO report specifically on S.A.
