Why the Tongan eruption will go down in the history of volcanology

Last week I detailed the fact that the U.S. and international legacy media have maintained near-radio silence about the possible global warming impacts created by last year’s explosive eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano adjacent to New Zealand. According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Hunga Tonga-Hunga’s eruption spewed 146 trillion grams of water vapor, one of the most efficient alleged greenhouse gases, into the upper atmosphere as detected by NASA’s Microwave Limb Sounder, an event that JPL scientists say “could end up temporarily warming the earth’s surface.”

Oh, you mean, like the higher-than-normal temperatures experienced in Texas and other isolated regions of the world this summer?

Now comes a new study conducted by scientists at the Climate Change Research Centre and Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The scientists, Martin Jucker, Chris Lucas, and Deepashree Dutta, reach the following assessment:

Volcanic eruptions typically cool the Earth's surface by releasing aerosols which reflect sunlight. However, a recent eruption released a significant amount of water vapor-a strong greenhouse gas-into the stratosphere with unknown consequences. This study examines the aftermath of the eruption and reveals that surface temperatures across large regions of the world increase by over 1.5°C for several years, although some areas experience cooling close to 1°C. Additionally, the research suggests a potential connection between the eruption and sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific , which warrants further investigation. [Emphasis added]

    [End]

The report also finds that the warming effects will occur over a period of a decade or more, likely peaking “around years 3-7 after eruption, i.e., 2025-2029.”

Obviously, the statement above that the findings in this study based on notoriously unreliable climate models “warrant further investigation” represents a massive understatement, but the point is pretty clear: A single volcano’s spewing 146 trillion grams of water vapor into the upper atmosphere is likely to cause planetary warming for a decade.

Now, we can be absolutely certain that the activists/politicians/media who constitute the membership of the Global Church of Climate Alarm will blame any warming that takes place this year and across the decade to come on your gas stoves, water heaters, air conditioners and SUVs. That is a given - the propaganda effort can never end, after all.

But these two reports about the potential warming impacts of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai will humble any thinking person over the awesome power of Mother Nature herself, a power that vastly overwhelms the rounding error impacts by the human race.

    That is all.
