Electric vehicles are relatively expensive because of the high end market they are currently aimed at, and the high end performance they have to reach, lots of add-ons and comfortable cabin things that have nothing to do with a basic car. The mass market, middle to low end is just starting to lift in production, mainly in China.
The infrastructure to support electric vehicles at this scale doesn't exist at the moment and needs to be built up.
ICE has had several decades to build itself into our lives. It will take a fe decades to electric to do the same. Electric is so simple, just need to build the "toyota" version like Japan did in the 60-70's, it over took the market. A basic model costing around $20-25k, with a $$6K battery and the market will grow rapidly.
The buidl process for electric vehicle will be simple, a few companies could produce the drive platfrom, 4 wheel, battery bed, suspension, and electric motors. This platform sold to car companies to build whatever they want on top in the cabin, luxury to peasant.
