standing down means that you are publicly identified.
I guess that is fine if you are ultimately cleared by the authorities, but once you are tarnished does it ever go away?
We see the bill shorten accusations doing the rounds again, even though police found nothing to proceed with. People will always claim his guilt.
We also have Cardinal Pell, cleared but forever tarnished. Many will never believe his innocence.
