I guess these welfare agencies are lying too, when they say they turned away almost 50,000 people needing a roof over their heads....these are just the people that turned up to welfare agencies......what about the others that are not entitled to welfare, or too embarrassed to go there....
(there are some people who do not use welfare, no matter how dire their circumstances)

    extract only......

In the latest survey of the nation's welfare agencies by the Australian Council of Social Services, released today, the steady rise in the number of complex clients is cited as a key factor in the enormous waiting lists for aid across Australia

In 2009-10, welfare agencies turned away those seeking help on 345,000 occasions - which meant that more than one in 20 of those eligible for aid couldn't get it. That was a 19 per cent increase in what's called the turn-away rate between 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Demand for housing crisis services outstripped supply 49,383 times as people desperate to secure a roof over their head were turned away.
