    stevo - I half agree with you, however the real objection is that the companies who develop the new strains have a monopoly over the 'designer' seeds and therefor total control over food production.
    It will be important in future to continue to keep seed banks of whatever is so far 'natural' (even though crops like 'wheat' are now quite modified from the original wheat plant - spelt is an older form of wheat, but even that is already the product of selective breeding back in antiquity).

    I agree with you, because I realise the world will have to come up with ever newer methods to make growing food more efficient - I believe GM crops do that, despite the monopoly danger.
