“The thing that worried me about Recce (from a medical specialist point of view) is that the doses used are huge. They have trialed up to 16g IV in humans. But even very well studied Benzyl Penicillin for serious illnesses indication (endocarditis) goes only to 12g/d. Penicillin relatively resistant meningitis doses may go up to 20g. And these aren't really meant for 15 min infusions.”

We don’t know the exact molecular size of the RCE compounds that are being tested but the initial claims in the various patents describe it as a “copolymer having a molecular weight of no more than 1500 Daltons, preferably no more than 1000 Daltons”.

The molecular weight of Benzyl Penicillin is 334 Daltons.

So the RCE copolymer in those claims would seem to be about 4 times the molecular size of Benzyl Penicillin.

The same number of active molecules of RCE that would be represented by the number of molecules in 20g of Benzyl Penicillin would be 80g of RCE.

Whilst the physical amount obviously cannot be ignored 16g of RCE might not be as large an amount as first seems when comparing it with Benzyl Penicillin. In terms of active molecules it would be the equivalent of the number found in 4g of Benzyl Penicillin.

12g of Benzyl Penicillin would represent 3 times the number of active molecules that are represented by 16g of RCE.
