Pretty much all my SMSF is in equities so each year, I compare the performance of the fund against the ASX50 accumulation index so see if my stock picks have overall outperformed or underperformed the index. Just a way of comparing whether I would be better in an index or managed fund. Unfortunately, this year I underperformed by 0.6% against the index (big weighting to materials and energy) but am up by 0.3% against the index for the three years I have been running the SMSF so overall a positive result, just.
But I only pay $699 to esuper and can manage by tax outcome unlike managed funds which tend to churn and incur tax. So overall, I'm doing much better running a SMSF than being in a superfund.
