I looked into Bain just briefly and recently to see what other pieces they might have. It seemed to me that their purchase of Hitachi Metals was part of a larger Japanese vision rather than a purchase focused on electrification for example.

I have looked many times for new bits of info in the past to no avail. Bain is not a big talker.

A Japanese consortium remains a significant partner in the new venture and as far as I can tell it is business as usual until we hear otherwise. Parent company might have tired of the patent war that was not a simple distraction and they have been restructuring across the conglomerate so not just HM.

I’m guessing that Bain does very little in fact except support HM’s current business model. They are not activist merely active? The business itself is coherent as it stands across magnetic materials.

I’ll have another go at Bain one of these days. The sale was remarkable and significant regardless what becomes of it and perhaps I also feel it is safer.

Licensing in particular? There are not enough ROW magnet makers making noise and perhaps not enough enforcement of licensing. A related issues then would be materials tracking and provenance to ensure that for example the magnets in that EV traction motor from China were in fact made by one of the few Chinese magnetmakers who has a license from Hitachi. Tricky business. Maybe that’s Bains specialty?
