BRS not only changed its name it has changed owners. After several attempts and looking forlorn... the Spanish TO has proved successful and along with Leightons and plenty other homegrown firms we wave goodbye, adiós, Au Revoir, Sayōnara and not least 再见/Zàijiàn to another friend.
Most jobs will stay in Oz but the profits won't. Local manufacturing (as a %) a fraction of that 60 yrs ago. We won't be making cars by 2018. LEI (now CIM) and BRS are contractors. Probably use imported steel and welding rods! The submarine contract is 50BILLION (yikes) and supposedly made in Adelaide. Time will tell what % stays at home.
Can we stop the relentless drift offshore? I doubt we can. We'll remain a quarry and tourist/education venue. At least the thousands of crappy 50sqm flats are sold to our friends overseas and they provide huge numbers of construction jobs. Is it feasible that one day they'll stop buying our apartments? Time will tell.
