ADR =" American Deposit receipt" from memory some people buy them as a currency hedge or for arbitrage but Americans buy them to have exposure to an International portfolio. Often 1 ADR will equal 10 shares of the Aussi company makes it a little more credable inthe USA where stocks valued under $1.00 are called penny dreadfulls unlike in Australia where stocks are often listed for an IPO at a low 20 cents.
