EW used to have a great video on socionomics - a study on how people behave, dress, the music that is made and how they spend etc at diffent phases of economic activity.
It is quite remarkable but not precise in the turning points.
How do we know we have been in a bull market? People buy bottled water when it is free from the tap.
I just threw that in, but women dress skimpily in boom times and sombre in bear times, films are light hearted and optimistic in bulls etc etc.
