Trendlines appear to be very simple structures but as you've noticed also very subjective - I construct them by taking the latest high and plotting back without cutting any of the bars and or wicks and touching as many highs as possible. The reverse then for an uptrend.
Another and sometimes more accurate way is to look for a change in momentum as per the following chart.
